Some of the more popular types include blood sausage, white sausage, hunter’s sausage, beer, country, barbecue, and many more.

Kielbasa is normally made from cured ground meat with an extra layer of fat to add depth, flavor, and moisture.

They are seasoned with spices such as garlic, bay leaf, and marjoram before being stuffed into casings, whether natural ones made of intestines or those made from artificial casings.

Then, the sausage is smoked and dried out to achieve a smokey taste that not only enhances its flavor and texture, but preserves the overall meat dish.

How to Cook Fresh Kielbasa

Kielbasa comes already cooked, per se, thanks to its drying and smoking process.

You can grill them or even cook them as is in boiling water and on low heat.

For freshly-made kielbasa, poke holes in the sausage prior to putting it in the pan or pot.

This will allow air bubbles trapped within to escape and, later on, allow its natural oils to come out and flavor the sausage while frying.

While you can forego the pricking process, bear in mind that you risk having the kielbasa explode, damaging its appearance.

Once you have pricked the sausage, you can simply place it in a large enough pot or a wide pan and cover with water.

Allow the water to boil before reducing the heat and simmering on low for approximately 30 minutes, more for larger sausages.

After simmering and cooking the kielbasa in their own juices, you can brown them in the oven or in another pan until they reach the desired outcome.

You can also cook fresh kielbasa by grilling them for 4 to 6 minutes afterward simmering.

To finish your cooking process in the oven, you can partially cook the kielbasa and allow them to cook in the oven in between baking sheets.

To keep their moisture and help retain the flavor, pour some of the cooking liquid over the sausages.

Then roast them for around 20 minutes or until the skins achieve a golden brown color.

Serving the Kielbasa

The beauty of kielbasa is that you can serve it in a variety of ways.

You can serve the boiled version with cheese and crackers and pair it with beer or even wine for a night in with friends and family.

Another Polish favorite is sauerkraut, a tangy, sour, fermented cabbage that boasts of complex flavors. Serve your sausage mixed with sauerkraut and you’ll have a medley of flavors in your mouth.
