In making wines and beers, yeast helps convert the sugar in grapes into alcohol and carbon dioxide.
The process of fermentation is responsible for this conversion, and yeast also adds coloring to wines and even flavoring.
A type of root vegetable, yam beans resemble sweet potatoes but are larger and contain more starch.
They grow in tropical countries and can be used in many ways like other edible tubers.
The plant grows as big as 70 kilograms, so it’s pretty huge.
On the outside, yam beans are very rough, bark-like, and hard to peel. But on the inside, they’re very soft, chewy, and delicious.
Their color is slightly red to purplish, resembling sweet potatoes.
A famous plant in the Caribbean, yautia is a cultivated special from the Xanthosama plant.
It is grown for its corn, petioles, and leaves, and is commonly known as taro. More than adding a distinct taste to a dish, this plant is used as a thickening agent in stews, sauces, and chowders.
Overall, yautia’s taste resembles black walnut and is quite woodsy on the palate. Cooks use this ingredient for the earthy and nutty taste, plus starchy consistency.
Greece’s traditional dish called yiros consists of charred pita, grilled lamb, tomato, red onion, lettuce, and tzatziki sauce.
The fillings are wrapped in pita bread, which is why it resembles shawarma in the Middle East and tacos al pastor.
The most common filling is lamb, but various options have been created to include chicken, beef, and pork. Other restaurants in Greece also serve yiros with halloumi and feta.
